A smart guide to layering!

Since the day I’ve got to know that our course people will be taking us to New York City for a field trip in January, I’m super excited to go there and explore the market as a fashion student! I’ve been to New York before but I’d gone there as a tourist to explore the city. Since we are going to New York in January, we will be facing harsh winters there. So I thought of writing down some tips for the same. Layering is one of the most crucial  aspects of winter dressing. It is the key to choosing how warm you want to feel, and also adds oodles of style to any winter look you may want to sport. Here are some points to keep in mind when layering up for the day:

Stick to thin but warm layers: Cotton t-shirts just won’t do the trick, no matter how many of them you put on. Body warmers and thin woolen sweaters are the way to go. Start with body hugging thermals or long-selvees top; then wear a sweater and finally a jacket. The trick is to cut the bulkiness of fluffy woolens while ensuring you are sufficiently insulated.

An assortment of lengths: Evenly distributing you visual weight will help avoid adding too much bulk to one area of the body, such as the arms, midriffs or hips. A thigh length cardigan over a closed sweater, cut-selvees jacket over a turtle-neck or a denim bolero jacket over a knee-length woolen dress will deviate the eye from any problem areas

Color is your friend: Colors are a great tool to use to your advantage, whether you want to create shapes or mask some areas. An even, dark shade will create the illusion of a taller, slimmer figure; while brighter colors can be used to accentuate certain areas of the body. Use this to your advantage to draw eyes towards your best features.

Accessories: Everything from shawls to scarves to belts to boots will help you create a perfect layered outfit. thigh-high boots teamed with leggings and a sweater dress will draw attention to your legs making you look like a leggy lass, while a large muffler draped over the body will hide any signs of bulging stomach. Thick high-waisted belts can be used to cinch the waist and create the enviable hourglass figure.
